The Meaning of ‘Sandwich’

People use the term ’sandwich’ loosely and I often get confused when something is a sandwich and when something isn’t a sandwich. For example, are burrito’s sandwiches? What about hot dogs? What about if you jam some “jambon” into a “baguette”? What about a dumpling with a hole in it? These questions were troubling me one night so I drafted this taxonomy of the different foods based on their topology, just to draw some lines and make the words more precise.

It starts with regular sandwiches in the middle. To the left we see what happens when sides are connected and to the right the wrapping is removed entirely. While I enjoy the whole spectrum, it’s the “sandwiches” that get my love.
