A sandwichy reader sent in this cute table of condiments (that periodically go bad). It’s a fantastic re-purposing of some boring science relic for practical and important use: sandwiches! Apparently “The concept and design was by Dana Arnett, Ken Fox, Fletcher Martin and John Naresky of VSA Partners, Chicago.” Since the source page didn’t own it, I replicated it below. Take a gander.
Some thoughts on it:
- Honey doesn’t go bad. Ever. Wikipedia says it’s good “for decades, and even centuries.”
- What is ‘French’? People? They certainly last longer. Dressing? I wouldn’t eat 2 month old French dressing!
- Why is Lox on this chart? What kind of luxuriously pampered sultan just adds a dash of smoked salmon to dishes whenever he feels? Maybe the sultan of sandwiches? (My jealousy of this fictional person is overwhelming.)

This is so awesome. You’re right, honey doesn’t ever go bad. It is naturally antibacterial. Oh, and the ancient Chinese used it to make rockets. I saw it on the Discovery Channel.
I would also like to voice my objection to the Vegemite entry. Vegemite is never good, therefore it cannot “go bad”. Please revise.
Re your vegemite comments, as an aussie I can only say it’s an aquired taste. I can’t get enough of it, when I’m feeling ill I make a cup of vegemite tea. Best cure for an upset stomach. If you have a sweet tooth you most probably won’t like it – it has a more savory taste. Don’t knock something you’ve never given a real go – which is something us aussies do.
