Blue Bunny Goes to Sedona, Forgets Flavor

Once upon a time there was a crappy, crowded street corner in midtown-west, Manhattan. It was bustling with tourists and cube-dwellers scouting the next big spandex hit. Life was drab and colorless. Then one hot summer day, Blue Bunny decided to launch a cross-promotion with Sedona, rent a truck and hand out free frozen yogurt sandwiches to all! There was much rejoicing on the streets as the tourists and cube dwellers danced in the streets, celebrating their free sandwiches. Eventually they returned to their attractions and offices to dig into their prize. And then the happiness began to fade: the “granola” was crumbly and had nearly zero oats or nuts. The yogurt was oddly textured and extremely sweet, laced with fudge. But it was still cold! Cold was great on that hot summer day in midtown. They were refreshed though, slightly disappointed with their free frozen yogurt sandwich: one one hand it was free and cold and inspired that gleeful celebration, on the other hand, it wasn’t very good and left them wishing they’d gotten some lemon sorbet or a fudgsicle (or a blended margarita…).

I was walking the halls at work the other day and spied one of those amazing futuristic ice cream machines with the little freezer inside and the magic suction tentacle. Then I spied the biggest pre-packaged ice cream sandwich I’ve ever seen: the blue bunny. This puppy is mammoth. So, I got one for $1.25 and it wasn’t very good.

It’s so big it’s like a small meal. The downside is that since it’s not very tasty, it’s more like a little block of torture: you want to keep eating it, thinking it’ll get better, but it never does. The dough was stiff. The ice cream tasted like someone spilled too much wax into the vat (notice it’s all clumpy). It did get a little better as it started melting, but due to all the science that went into it, it takes forever.

Avoid this sandwich!

Next on my journey for ice cream sandwich omnipotence is this sorry excuse for the real thing. No mater what those hippy vegans say, soy “ice cream” still tastes like cardboard (just like those soy dogs — disgusting). It continues to amaze me that we can send people to the moon and launch robots to rove around Mars, but we can’t make fake ice cream that doesn’t taste like it came from the paper mill.

Here are some photo’s so you know what to avoid. Notice the weird granular texture of the “ice cream”. Look how much of the dough falls off on my fingers — way way too much. Maybe the dough is made from cardboard too? It’s also kinda gross how much of the “ice cream” falls off into the packaging. That’s not natural folks!

Everyone started chanting “DQ! DQ! DQ!” and off to DQ we went. I wasn’t too excited since they serve mostly ice cream and not sandwiches, which is like heresy in the church of sandwich. Someone asked me what I wanted and I started reading the menu while beginning to decline, “oh, noth — “, and then I saw it, “– one ice cream sandwich!”

And so it begins.

This one is a novelty because they forsaken the traditional rectangular shape in favor of a fun circular flower-like design, emblazoned with the DQ logo. As you’ll notice in some of the photos, the cake/dough is a little waxy and when you hold it little bits get stuck to your finger tips, which is awesome. Overall the sandwich was tasty, a bit sweet and didn’t feel like I was eating a pile of chemicals, which surprised me.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be reviewing all the ice cream sandwiches I can find. And since I can’t seem to buy non-sandwich food items, that’s bound to be a lot of delicious sandwiches.

I usually focus on non-dessert sandwiches (partially because they usually get trounced by fancier desserts), but this time of year is different. This is the season where the chocolate mousse makes way for the gentle waxy crust of an ice cream sandwich.
