Apparently August is sandwich month. Isn’t this exciting? When I heard about it I was totally psyched, and then I looked around and found that, no it’s not a federal holiday, no I still have to go to work, no I still have to pay taxes and no my sandwiches still end. Furthermore, it shares it’s dubious claim to August with such holidays as “International Breastfeeding Month” and “National Catfish Month” (Holidays for Everyday: Aug 2007). This is insane. Can’t we have someone to govern which of these crap holidays are real? Can’t we make “National Sandwich Month” a full-blown national holiday so everyone can have a month off to really focus on what’s important?

Then again, why make sandwich month just a month? Sandwiches are forever. Maybe we could have a sandwich decade, or century. I’m starting it now: 2000 is the MILLENNIUM OF SANDWICHES! Raise your breads and meats to the sky and celebrate the SANDWICH MILLENNIUM with a tasty ‘wich or two!

This blog will honor sandwiches in all their delicious glory. It will be a celebration; a festival; a sandwichy orgy.

Some posts will be inconsistent: crunchy at times and soft at others. Some will be meaty and some will be lighter and fluffy. As a whole, I hope it’ll be as delicious as the subject matter.

I’ll open the discussion with something that’s been troubling me: If sandwiches were invented by the Earl of Sandwich in 1762 (wikipedia), and bread was invented by the Egyptians a few thousand years ago, why did it take so damn long to make sandwiches?

That’s roughly 3,000 years of sandwiches that we missed out on! Come on people, we need to make up for lost time! Have a sandwich! No have two!
